Little Things Matter - Our Charitable Nature

Hummingbird Coffee has been brewing social goodness for 20 years. It’s in our DNA. We believe small choices can have a big impact. You can make a difference through your daily actions, one cup at a time, by choosing coffee that helps deliver positive effects to local communities. It’s the little things that matter.

Little Things Matter - Our Charitable Nature

Does good coffee taste better? We think so.

We think coffee should give back. That’s why our charitable work started in 2011.

As the brand grew we formalised our commitment to local community activities through our Green Bean Fund, this fund spans New Zealand and supports a range of initiatives every year.

For every $100 of green coffee beans we source, $1 goes back to building better communities. Here are some of the things our Green Bean Fund has supported:

  • The 30c from every Re:Start coffee blend we sold added up to a $100,000 donation over two years to Christchurch’s The Court Theatre.

  • During the initial 2020 COVID lockdowns, we donated coffee to the essential workers across Auckland.

  • At Christmas time in 2021 we donated a total of $20,000 to the Auckland and Christchurch City Missions to help ease the hardship resulting from the COVID pandemic.

  • In 2022 we partnered with The Green Lab and donated $10,000 to support construction of Christchurch’s Mairehau Neighbourhood Garden.

  • Also in 2022 we became the Student Volunteer Army’s Crisis Response Partner, supporting them with a $40,000 grant.

  • We donated $50,000 to support Student Volunteer Army’s clean-up efforts in Auckland, Northland and Gisborne after the floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, and a further $40,000 in June 2024 towards continued crisis response work, including the SVA’s Wairoa flooding response.

  • In 2023, we donated $29,050 across four NZ charities as part of our on-pack promotion through supermarkets and retail sales. This meant Forest & Bird, The Kindness Collective Foundation, Student Volunteer Army and Youthline were able to each deliver more of their remarkable work to support our environment or communities across the motu.

  • At a time of great need we donated a further $15,000 to the Kindness Collective as well as tea and coffee products to support their 2023 Christmas Joy Store and food bank packages.

  • In 2024 we extended our partnership with The Green Lab by donating $70,000 to help build the Te Kohanga Taiao Sensory Nature Play Park in Christchurch’s earthquake red zone.

You can do a lot with a tiny coffee bean. The little things add up.
